Topline Milk Company’s Low & Slow Pasteurized Milk
Ingredients: Milk
Nutrition Facts: The product is not standardized. The USDA (https://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods/show/70) gives the composition of a whole milk with 3.25% fat as follows: 1 cup (244g) serving, Calories 149, Protein 7.69g, Total fat 7.93g, Carbohydrate (by difference) 11.71g, Sugars 12.32g. [Note: Lactose is the principle milk sugar]
Comment from Website: “At Top Line Milk Company we obtain all of our milk directly from our own Holstein dairy cows at PH Ranch. PH Ranch is recognized as a “Gold Standard Dairy” by Dairy Farmers of America for its animal welfare and high-quality milk. Quality milk starts with quality cows, of course, so we work hard to give our cows the very best care and nutrition.”
GFF Comments: While this product does not call out its protein content, protein is considered a key benefit of milk. According to a company representative at its booth during 2016 Natural Product Expo West, the product is meant to combine the benefits of a “raw food” while still being safe. He noted the definition of “raw” can be subjective. Top Line pasteurizes its milk on-farm by heating to 145 degrees for 30 minutes in insulated vat pasteurizers. Thus it is on the opposite end of the processing spectrum from the trend towards high temperature short time pasteurization. The product also isn’t homogenized.

Comment from Website: “…the perfect pre and post workout snack”
GFF Comments: We ran across the Protein Poppers at 2016 NPEW and were intrigued by the “Gluten-free Vegan Coconut” which was described as being “amino-infused.” FDA regulations do not allow added amino acids to be included as part of the PDCAAS calculation of protein quality in foods (it is permitted in supplements). However, it is an innovative addition for a sport nutrition product. Other claims include “handmade” and “fresh Ingredients” which may contribute to its steep price. Price $5.00/ 2 = 28gm balls (1 oz) + $15 shipping.

GFF Comment: A Thai source of cricket protein flour was available for tasting at the 2015 Protein Trends & Technologies Seminar. That ingredient was relatively too dark, gritty and a bit aromatic to be easily used in many food products. The owner of this company has been developing a process to produce a refined whole cricket powder. It is produced in the USA from farm-raised crickets.
